School of Music’s Deborah Rifkin instructs at Folk College music campContributed by Jenny Stockdale on 06/27/13 This past May, Associate Professor of Music Theory Deborah Rifkin performed and led workshops at Folk College—a music camp held at Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA, in the picturesque Allegheny Mountains. Rifkin was invited to lead several workshops on fiddling, Klezmer, English Country Dance, and Contradance music. She performed Balkan tunes on fiddle, sharing the stage with the Boston-based Irish duo Matt and Shannon Heaton, Bluegrass group The Barefoot Movement, and Old Time band The Stray Birds. She also directed a vocal improvisation band. Folk College—this year consisting of three concerts, 68 workshops, two coaching sessions, jamming, singing, and dancing—is a project of Simple Gifts and the Huntingdon County Arts Council, supported in part by a grant from Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour.
